This research investigates the factors related to exit decisions within the healthcare industry. Drawing on the exercise motivation theory, we delineate the hygiene and fashion sectors as categories adjacent to the healthcare sector and elucidate the interrelationships between these sectors through supplier-side risk perception and buyer-side card spending during infectious disease outbreaks. With publicly available data and card spending data, we analyze fitness center closures in Seoul using a spatial model. The findings reveal the following patterns: first, from the suppliers’ side, regions with a higher concentration of workers in the hygiene category tend to experience a greater number of fitness center closures. In contrast, regions with a larger proportion of fashion-related workers exhibit a lower rate of closures. Second, considering the buyers’ perspective, regions with elevated card spending in the hygiene sector show no significant differences in closures, while regions with higher fashion-related compensatory consumption are associated with an increased number of fitness center closures. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how the healthcare market responds to health crises, offering valuable insights for industry stakeholders and policymakers.
